About Temple Emanuel of Newton
Temple Emanuel is a Conservative, fully egalitarian congregation founded in 1935 in Newton, Massachusetts, and affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Synagogue Council of Massachusetts. With a vibrant membership of more than 1,200 families, it draws Jews of diverse backgrounds from Newton and surrounding communities who share a commitment to Jewish living, learning, and community.
The congregation offers a broad spectrum of programming organized around what it calls the Seven Gates: Community, Shabbat and Prayer, Learning, Life Cycle Rituals, Music, Israel, and Social Action. Daily minyan, Shabbat services, holiday celebrations, adult education, and youth and family programs are all central to Temple Emanuel’s identity, and services are available both in person and via livestream.
Temple Emanuel strives to offer the best of both large and intimate community experiences — the resources and choices of a major congregation combined with smaller communities of shared passion and connection. Whether members are navigating life’s milestones, seeking spiritual depth, engaging in social action, or simply looking for belonging, Temple Emanuel provides a welcoming and supportive environment.
The synagogue is also notably inclusive, holding LGBTQ+-affirming policies including gender-inclusive bathrooms, anti-bullying initiatives, and a non-discrimination policy. Membership is structured to be accessible, with free dues in the first year and voluntary dues until the oldest household member reaches age 36.
