About Temple Israel of the City of New York

Temple Israel of the City of New York is a Reform Jewish congregation founded in 1870 as Congregation “Hand in Hand” in Harlem, which grew over nearly 150 years into one of Manhattan’s leading Reform synagogues, now located in a distinctive Brutalist-style building at 112 East 75th Street on the Upper East Side. The congregation offers Shabbat and holiday worship (in person and streamed online), a religious school (Gates of Learning legacy), adult education, lifecycle events, and social action programs rooted in progressive Jewish values.

Beyond traditional worship, Temple Israel runs NYConnect, a dedicated community for adults in their 20s and 30s that hosts Shabbat services, holiday gatherings, casual hangouts, and other social and spiritual experiences designed to help young professionals celebrate Judaism and build community in New York City.

With roughly 620 member families, Temple Israel is affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) and offers wheelchair accessibility, live-streamed services, and connections to URJ camps and academies, making it a warm, multigenerational spiritual home on the Upper East Side.
