About Temple Israel

Founded in 1854, Temple Israel of Boston is the second oldest synagogue in New England and has been the largest Reform congregation in the region for most of its history. Today it remains a vibrant, urban, and diverse Reform Jewish community rooted in the Longwood/Fenway area of Boston, offering worship, learning, and social justice programming to families and individuals across generations.

Temple Israel’s mission is to live Judaism together through discovery, dynamic spirituality, and righteous impact. Congregants engage through worship services, adult and youth education (including a religious school, teen programs, and B’Mitzvah preparation), music and arts programming such as the Boston Jewish Arts Festival, and a robust social justice agenda addressing issues of racial and economic equity.

The congregation is also home to the Riverway Project, a dedicated initiative connecting adults in their 20s and 30s to Jewish life, community, and each other through Shabbat services, social gatherings, and affinity-based programming. With lay-led “TI Circles,” niche interest groups, and Israel-related programming, Temple Israel offers many ways for congregants of all ages to find community and meaning.
