About Temple Sinai
Temple Sinai is a Reform Jewish congregation located in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC. The congregation traces its roots to 1950, when a group of seven families began meeting informally in search of a more inclusive interpretation of Reform Judaism, striving to build “a congregation of equals.” It was officially chartered by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (now the Union for Reform Judaism) on April 1, 1951, and after several years worshipping at locations including the National Cathedral’s Bethlehem Chapel, it built its permanent home at Military Road NW, with the cornerstone laid in 1957.
Today Temple Sinai serves over a thousand member families with a wide range of worship experiences, religious education for children and adults, a nursery school, and robust social action programming. The congregation emphasizes Shabbat observance, lifelong Jewish learning, concern for Israel, and communal involvement rooted in Reform Jewish values.
Led by clergy including Senior Rabbi Jon Roos, Temple Sinai offers a welcoming, spiritually engaging environment for individuals and families throughout the greater Washington, DC area seeking connection to Jewish life, tradition, and tikkun olam (social action).
