About Valley Beth Shalom
Valley Beth Shalom (VBS) is a Conservative synagogue located in Encino, California, in the San Fernando Valley. With approximately 1,500 member families, it is one of the largest synagogues in Los Angeles and one of the largest Conservative congregations in the United States, and has been recognized by Newsweek as one of America’s most vibrant congregations.
Founded decades ago and shaped for over 40 years by the leadership of the influential Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis, VBS is known nationally for its innovations in synagogue life, including pioneering havurah (small group) programs, and for its strong emphasis on Jewish learning, worship, and ethical action (Gemilut Hasadim). The congregation describes its mission around three pillars: Torah (Jewish learning), Avodah (Jewish worship, celebration, and commemoration), and Gemilut Hasadim (ethical action and social responsibility).
VBS welcomes Jews of all backgrounds, including Jews by choice, interfaith families, and Jews of all ethnicities and sexual orientations. The synagogue offers a full range of programs including daily minyan, Shabbat and holiday services (also livestreamed), a religious/day school, adult education through its Schulweis Institute, meditation programs, and social action initiatives such as an emergency food pantry serving the San Fernando Valley community.
