Little more than a decade ago, Zibby Owens was raising kids, binging on chocolate chip cookies and looking for direction. She wrote a memoir, a novel and a fashion/fitness book; got divorced and started a crumb cake business; remarried and churned out parenting essays.

Then one night her husband said, off-handedly, “You should really write a book of all those parenting essays.”

Zibby scoffed.

“Moms don’t have time to read books!” she said.

With that, a new career was born, the beginning of a journey to the media empire she describes in her new essay collection, Between Chapters: How I Started Over, Took Some Chances, and Found the Plot.

But Zibby is hardly alone. All over the world, women are inventing, reinventing and re-reinventing themselves.

Think Bobbi Brown, who started out as a makeup artist, revolutionized the beauty industry with natural-shade lipsticks, sold her company, became a health coach, launched a second beauty brand, moved into eyewear and perfume, opened a boutique hotel, cofounded a film and TV studio and managed to write ten books.

Or Sabrina Rudin, who moved to Aspen after college to become a snowboarding instructor, then went back to graduate school to study international affairs only to wind up as a plant-based food guru with cafes in Colorado and New York and now a book about eating — and feeding your children — healthier food.
