About Met Council

Met Council (Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1972 and headquartered in New York City. It is America’s largest Jewish-sponsored social safety net, helping over 350,000 clients each year through ten different departments staffed by experts who advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers.

The organization’s holistic programs include 100% affordable housing, crisis intervention, family violence services, a Holocaust survivor program, career services, home services, and one of the largest kosher food distribution networks in the country, distributing millions of meals annually to hungry New Yorkers.

Met Council is also the umbrella organization for 15 local Jewish Community Councils throughout New York City, coordinating grassroots social-service efforts across the five boroughs. Its Brooklyn Hub and Chesed Center expand direct services to families struggling with the economic challenges of the pandemic era and beyond.

Through advocacy, direct service, and partnership with government and philanthropic funders, Met Council creates pathways from crisis to self-sufficiency for poor and near-poor New Yorkers of all backgrounds.
