Shabbat Exploration Series: Cohort Opening Shabbat

Hosted by

Tribe 12

This event is an opening Shabbat dinner to kickoff our Shabbat Exploration Series cohort. If you register for this cohort, no need to register for the individual Shabbat Exploration Series events! While the full series will include programs that anyone can “drop in” for, the kickoff is exclusively for those who choose to be part of the cohort. See below for all the details!

If you are not joining the cohort but would still like to celebrate Shabbat that evening, note that Tribe 12’s regular Monthly Shabbat Dinner is happening at the same time.

Shabbat is a day of rest, joy, and connection, and there are many ways to experience it. Maybe you want a break from your phone for a day, or even just for a few hours, but that might feel lonely. Maybe you’ve been wanting to check out a synagogue in town, but don’t want to go by yourself. Maybe you want to connect over a leisurely Shabbat lunch and songs with other people, feeling like there’s nowhere you have to rush off to, just being fully in the moment.

This is the inspiration for our Shabbat Exploration Series. Each month from January to June, Jewish 20s and 30s will come together for a different Saturday morning Shabbat experience, rotating between synagogue-based ones and home/nature-based ones. This is a chance to explore different ways of doing Shabbat to see what fits for you individually, while also forming friendships with others who are doing the same. The experiences are open to people who currently have any level of Shabbat observance, including zero experience, and there is no end goal regarding how you observe. Tribe 12 Rabbinic Intern Adina Ikeman and Tribe 12 Director of Engagement(s) Danielle Selber will lead these experiences.

You can drop in to individual experiences or sign up to be part of the cohort (people who commit to the whole series).

Participation options:

Drop in to individual experiences: Just interested in one or two offerings? You can register for any individual experience on Tribe 12’s website just like any other program.

  • $5 for synagogue-based experiences (includes a meal)
  • $10 for home- or nature-based experiences (includes a meal)

Join the cohort: Want to enjoy the full arc of the program? Develop friendships with a cohort of participants who are also exploring what Shabbat means to them. Cohort members are welcome to attend all programming; if you need to miss something, that is completely fine.

  • $54 covers all Saturday morning experiences and two Shabbat dinners
  • Cohort members have the benefit of attending opening and closing Shabbat dinners with Danielle and Adina!

Schedule: (subject to change and will be updated)

Saturday, January 31st: Potluck lunch and singing (Northwest location TBA)
Saturday, February 21st: Synagogue experience (Society Hill Synagogue service & kiddush lunch)
Saturday, March 21st: Shabbat lunch and walk (Wissahickon)
Saturday, April 11th: Synagogue experience (Center City location TBA)
Saturday, May 16th: Guided Shabbat hike (Northwest location TBA)
Saturday, June 6th: Synagogue experience (Center City location TBA)

Friday, January 16th: Opening Shabbat for cohort members (Old City as part of Tribe 12’s monthly Shabbat)
Friday, May 29th: Closing Shabbat for cohort members (Location TBA)

Jewish Speed Dating: Board Game Edition

Hosted by

Tribe 12

After a bunch of you sent us Quirk’s board game speed dating event, we asked them if they would do a Jewish version… and the nice Jewish boy who happens to run the company said YES!

Here’s how it works: A gaming concierge walks you through several games over the course of the night. You play classics you love and discover brand new games you’ve never heard of, playing each with a different group of fun singles. At the end of the night, you give your gaming concierge a list of the folks you met that you’d like to date and a list of those you met that you’d like to just hang out with as friends.

Quirk will also be advertising this to the (Jewish) folks in their own community so expect new faces and lots of fun. Hot tip: if you join their mailing list, you will get a code for 50% off this event!

We will sample the various species of Tu B’Shvat fruits and nuts, along with four cups of wine, while exploring our connection to nature and spirituality. Each category will be accompanied by a food-related activity, like crostini-making and cupcake-decorating. Throughout the seder there will be activities like planting your own herbs to take home, a social action project, and discussion around themes of environmental consciousness and Jewish mysticism.
