Overview
This Jewish Heritage Tour of Japan invites travelers into a rich encounter with history, spirituality, culture, memory, and human connection. From Tokyo’s modern energy and ancient shrines to the refined beauty of Kyoto, Kanazawa, Hiroshima, Kobe, and beyond, the journey explores Japan through both its iconic landscapes and its lesser-known Jewish stories.
Participants will meet local Jewish communities in Tokyo and Kobe, welcome Shabbat together, and reflect on the remarkable wartime rescue routes that brought Jewish refugees through Japan during the Holocaust. Visits to Tsuruga’s Port of Humanity Museum, Fukuyama’s Holocaust Education Center, and sites connected to Chiune Sugihara’s “Visas for Life” legacy deepen the tour’s focus on resilience, moral courage, and remembrance.
Alongside these meaningful encounters, travelers will experience Japan’s extraordinary aesthetics and traditions: Zen temples, samurai districts, gardens, tea ceremony, bonsai, kimono weaving, geisha entertainment, sacred islands, bullet trains, and vibrant urban neighborhoods. Throughout the journey, Melton learners will engage Japan not only as visitors, but as thoughtful explorers discovering beauty, memory, spirituality, and shared humanity.
Participants arrive independently throughout the day and settle into the rhythm of Japan. This evening is at leisure to rest, explore nearby streets, or enjoy a first taste of Japanese cuisine.

We begin with an orientation session before exploring Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Roppongi, and Shibuya. Together we encounter the fascinating contrasts between ancient tradition and contemporary Japan. In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner joined by members of the local Jewish community.

Our day begins in Asakusa and Sensoji Temple, evoking the atmosphere of old Edo-era Tokyo. We continue to elegant Ginza before boarding the famed Shinkansen bullet train to Kanazawa. After arrival, we enjoy an evening stroll through the beautifully preserved Higashi Chaya teahouse district.

Today we explore Kenrokuen Garden, the contemporary 21st Century Museum, and the Nagamachi Samurai District. Participants may choose between a cultural workshop connected to gold leaf or Kutani ceramics, or an excursion toward the breathtaking village landscapes of Shirakawa-go.

We travel to Tsuruga to learn the extraordinary story of Jewish refugees who escaped Europe through Japan during the Holocaust. Visits include the Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum and the Red Brick Warehouse district. By evening, we arrive in Kobe to welcome Shabbat with the local Jewish community.

Shabbat prayers and Kiddush with the community are followed by a walking exploration of Kobe's historic Kitano District and Ikuta Shrine. Those interested may enjoy a gentle walk near Nunobiki Falls. The evening is at leisure.

We journey into the world of kimono weaving at the Nishijin Textile Center, enjoy free time at Nishiki Market, visit Nijo Castle, and explore the atmospheric streets of Higashiyama and Gion. In the evening, we enjoy a special Japanese dinner accompanied by Geisha entertainment.

The bamboo groves of Arashiyama, the serenity of Tenryuji Zen Temple, and a traditional tea ceremony offer insight into Japanese aesthetics and spirituality. We continue to Kinkakuji before boarding the Shinkansen to Hiroshima.

At Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, we reflect on war, destruction, and resilience. Later, we travel to the sacred island of Miyajima to visit Itsukushima Shrine and Daishoin Temple.

Today we encounter the remarkable Beit Shalom community and Holocaust Education Center in Fukuyama. We continue to the extraordinary Shinshoji Zen Museum and Gardens for a special vegetarian Udon lunch before traveling onward to Inuyama.

In Yaotsu, we deepen our exploration of Chiune Sugihara's legacy through visits to the Memorial Hall and the Visas for Life Monument. A gentle nature walk near the Gohotaki waterfalls offers time for reflection before returning to Tokyo.

We visit the renowned Shunkaen Bonsai Museum, meet a master Bonsai artist, and continue to the Tokyo National Museum and Ueno Park. As evening approaches, we gather with the local Jewish community for Shabbat dinner.

Our final day includes a walking tour of Tokyo and time for reflection on the experiences shared throughout the journey. Following Havdallah, we gather for a farewell dinner and closing conversation celebrating learning, friendship, and discovery.
